coffee and cake...as it was

Christmas Eve found me in Hampstead to meet a friend for breakfast.  We were attracted by a window full of an amazing assortment of cakes...the window of Louis' Patisserie. It looked busy and we wanted something savoury to begin so we kept walking, but made our way back about an hour later when it had gone from very busy to completely empty. We walked in and immediately felt transported to the 70's. The place had clearly not changed much in the last couple decades. We wondered how we would choose from the many cakes we had seen in the window just as someone approached us with a tray full of cake...we asked for a description of at least a dozen and finally chose two to go with our cappuccinos.  The first is a traditional Hungarian cake with chocolate buttercream, yellow cake and toffee on top. The second was a lemon cake with marzipan on top and chocolate. The cakes were great and the unique atmosphere added a quirky-ness to the experience.  I recommend a visit.
